Mustard Paint (a S.C.-Style BBQ Sauce)

A delicious, easy, mustard-based barbeque recipe. Old Southern style! I’ve included my notes and variations.

See the recipe: Mustard Paint.

My Notes and Variations on this Recipe:

This recipe is very forgiving! I use 4 times as much brown sugar as the recipe calls for. It’s quite tart without it. I think you could use even more sugar if you want. I discovered this through one of those “happy accidents.” The recipe makes a lot, so the first time I made it I divided the recipe by four, but I forgot to divide the brown sugar. But it turned out even better this way!

I have also tried using the 2 tablespoons of lemon juice instead of beer (as noted in the recipe). One time I accidentally used 3 times too much lemon juice & it was still good!

The recipe does not mention it, but of course you can use this sauce on chopped pork, as we do around here in the Carolinas.
